Gary Scales' '66 Beaumont

The Royal Plum coloured ’66 Beaumont Custom is a one family car. The Beaumont was originally purchased in July 1966 at Empress Motors in Victoria BC by Carolyn’s mother. In 1974 we purchased the Beaumont and it became our daily driver for nearly twenty years. It even made a couple of family vacation trips to Disneyland!

As the Beaumont started to become a little tired, it found itself parked for five years under a tarp in our backyard. I was always going to get around to “fixing” it up. My friends began to give me a bad time about the poor old Beaumont just sitting there in the backyard! I couldn’t take the constant reminders so the big decision was finally made and a complete frame off restoration was started.

The frame was sand blasted and powder coated and all brake, gas and transmission lines were replaced with stainless. Every nut, bolt and bushing was replaced. The body was in reasonable shape, however, the decision was made to replace the existing quarter panels with new ones. The rest of the exterior was completely redone; not a piece was left untouched. Every part was either painted, powdercoated or rechromed to new again.

The interior needed some attention. 1966 Beaumonts had their own distinctive cloth pattern upholstery and it needed to be redone. A pattern was taken from another car and sent to a shop in the US where they made the exact reproduction (colour and pattern). The interior was completely refreshed and made “as new”. Rick Pawlas made replacement decals for the glove box, air cleaner and valve covers.

I have entered the car in many show ‘n shines and it has taken home a few trophies in its stock class. One thing the Beaumont doesn’t like is water so it only ventures out when the forecast is for sunshine! Special thanks goes out to my wife for putting up with me being constantly in the garage with the Beaumont for a couple of years!
