Car: 1966 Chevelle SS
![]() |
As long as I can remember I have been a “car guy.” I grew up during the muscle car era and started my apprenticeship to be a mechanic then. I’ve owned several nice cars, 66 Chevelle, 67 Camaro, 69 Dart GTS to name a few. The bug has never left me.
Every summer the town of Orillia has a week end “Show & Shine”. The main street is shut down, muscle cars, hot rods and classics line both sides of the street. This year there were over 500 vehicles. I always make sure I’m in town on this week end. I was about half way through the show when I turned to the right and saw my car!! A 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS parked against the curb with a for sale sign on the windshield. Camera in hand I began taking pictures from all angles. I knew right then and there I had to have this car. I looked around but the owner was nowhere to be found. I continued to check out the rest of the cars all the while thinking about the Chevelle. I came back to the Chevelle several times to see if the owner was around but to no avail.
It was time to leave so away I went. While driving home I was doing nothing but thinking about the Chevelle and wondering if I would ever see it again. When I downloaded the pictures I had taken on my computer I realized that I had a great shot of the license plate, hmmmmmmmmm I thought. Could I possibly trace the plate and find out who owned it? A couple of weeks passed and I decided to attend a local “Flea Market Swap Meet” one of the biggest in the area. As I was walking through the meet with a friend of mine I suddenly saw the Chevelle down an aisle……… the same 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS. This time the owner was right there with the car. We started chatting about the car I was asking tons of questions. I mentioned to him I was interested in buying it. During the next 2 weeks we talked, we met; we went for drives and finally hammered out a deal. The original owner was an absolute pleasure to deal with.
The specs on the car are as follows: An original documented 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS, 58,000 Original miles. Trim – 763 Black. Paint – B- Blue Charcoal Metallic. Production Plant – Oshawa, ON. Production Date – March 24, 1966. Shipping Date – March 24, 1966. Dealer – Hallman Motors Ltd, Hanover, ON.
My plans for the car are as follows: -Install an HEI Distributor -Front Disc Brake Conversion -Install Power Steering -Interior needs a little work (showing it’s age). Other than that I’m just going to enjoy it every chance I get!
