Car: 1966 Malibu SS

When I first got my driver's licence, I started driving a '57 Chevy that I "fixed up" and then sold to buy my next car; my pride and joy stock 1967 Acadian Canso, SD 327 4 speed. I purchased the Canso in 1972 from a friend who had driven it very little. After five years it had only 15,000 miles showing on the odometer! It was a great car, however, I had to regrettably sell it to buy a more useful (boring) vehicle, a pickup truck! In the late '90's when muscle car fever resurfaced I remembered my Canso and my buddy's '66 Chevelle. I had always admired his Chevelle! The search began for a replacement Canso or a Chevelle. After looking seriously for about two years I purchased our '66 Malibu SS in November 2000.
With the advent of the internet my search had led me throughout Canada and the USA. Ironically I found the car I was looking for close to home on Vancouver Island BC. Besides the Muscle Car fever another reason I wanted to get "back into cars" was my 14 year old son. I felt the car hobby was a perfect solution for Dad and son to spend time together! This has worked out well for both of us and he is itching to get behind the wheel when he gets his licence. He somehow thinks that he will learn to drive on a 4-speed Malibu SS!
Our '66 Malibu SS, one of only 499 with the L34 396/360hp option, was originally white with a red interior. Over the years the exterior became red and the interior is now black. The Malibu SS was originally purchased at Mander Chev Olds in Vancouver. It had been restored within the five years before we purchased it. We completed the restoration by returning it to totally stock, thus allowing for us to obtain Collector plates. A copy of the original build sheet shows the main options as: L34 396, M20 4 speed, 3.73 positrac.
The two previous owners of the car had kept a fibreglass hood on the vehicle. The hood has been replaced with a NOS hood to bring the body back to stock. We have redone some of the interior, redone the exhaust system and replaced "little bits and pieces" under the hood. The body and interior are in nearly flawless condition now. A complete detailing of the engine and engine compartment are next on the agenda, and a few small pieces of trim require replacement to finish the Malibu SS off. It is very difficult to find information about the car as it is a rare Canadian built Malibu SS; not the US made Super Sport 396.
Since purchasing the car we have enjoyed attending car shows when we have had the time. The car usually turns heads and gets its fair share of comments about being a Malibu SS. It has lots of power and is a real fun car to drive. Having this vehicle has also allowed us to meet many great Canadian Classic Chevelles / Beaumonts club members. We look forward to another season of driving our Malibu SS.
