Car: 1964 Chevelle

For some members this will be the second time that they have read about my car. This is the fourth time that I have written a story about my car. My car has been featured in the following national publications NCOA's Chevelle Report January 1994 issue and Aces' Chevelle World May/June 1996 issue. My story starts in 1990 when I purchased my 64 Chevelle Malibu sedan from the original owner. The Malibu had only 70,000 original miles and seem to be in fine shape. Even though the car was in excellent condition Em and myself decided that we wanted something different so I started looking for options to redo the car to our tastes.

Our Malibu came with the following stock options: 195 HP 283 V8 engine, powerglide automatic transmission, padded dash, two speed wiper motor, AM push-button radio with rear speaker, and custom seat belts. While our car is not a striped out plain jane its has now become a fully optioned out Malibu sedan that could have been ordered from the factory in 1964.

Here is a list of the factory installed stock options my Malibu sedan has:

  Options Option Description

A02 Windshield glass Tinted

A49 Seat Belts Front w/retractor

B70 Cover I/P Upper Padded

C14 Wiper System Windshield electric

M35 Powerglide Transmission

P65 7.75-14-4 PR tire Hwy

U63 Radio Push-button AM

Over the next couple of years I scoured every issue of Hemmings Motor News looking for all sorts of NOS (New Old Stock) parts like trim, mirrors, tissue dispenser and so on. In the mean time the Malibu was put into the body shop to have the one small ding taken out and the complete body sanded down to bear metal before a new Ermine White base coat/clear coat paint job was done to the car.

The original owner had a few options added to this Malibu when he purchased the vehicle.
They included the following:

  Options Option Description

C50 Rear Window Defogger

J50 Power Brakes

N40 Power Steering

Some of the additional options I have installed on our car are the following:

Options Option Description

N34 Steering Wheel, wood grained plastic

P02 Simulated wire wheel covers 14"

U16 Tachometer

V31 Front Bumper guard

V32 Rear Bumper guard

Other options installed include child proof door locks, paper tissue dispenser, power front seat, vacuum trunk opener, dual rear antennas, auxiliary lighting package, left & right hand bowtie mirrors, dash mounted clock, gauges, parking brake indicator, four way flasher and locking gas cap. These options are a mixture of factory and dealer installed options.

Since we got the car back from the body shop in early 1991 we have taken the "White Ghost" as we call our Malibu sedan everywhere. We take the car to car shows from Campbell River to car shows in the northwestern US. We have won our share of trophies over the years, for a four door sedan the Malibu holds its own against tough competition from V8, four speed two door coupes.

Since the last time I did a write up we have had the motor rebuilt. While our 283 V8 still resembles the stock motor it used to be, thanks to Gary Stossel it has been updated internally, balanced and has helped the car burn up the asphalt. My favorite pass time now is baiting unsuspecting five litre Mustang owners.

Our odometer reads 90,000 original miles. As we always say our car is no "trailer queen" she gets driven to every show she enters. I said before, most people are into two door coupes with V8's and four speed transmissions while four door sedans go unnoticed. Our car turns the tables and lets the four door sedan have its time in the limelight.
