Car: 1970 Chevelle SS 2 Dr Hdtp

Rich Hafer

I bought the car new in 1970. I ordered the car January 6, 1970 from a local dealer (Jack Schade Chev. Olds) in Ligonier PA. I wanted power steering, a bench seat, column shift and power disk brakes. The SS package and functional hood with stripes were the basic package and what I could afford at the time. I ended up with the Z25 package and according to Mr. Zapora, GM vintage specialist, there were only 3,306, 1970 Chevelles with the Z25 packages exported to the U.S. The production date of my Chevelle was Feb. 19,1970 and the shipping date was Feb. 20, 1970. I took ownership March 6,1970. The car is all original to this date, right down to the tires. The car has been repainted in 1985 and I plan to have it done again soon.

There have been only two major breakdowns to this date. The flywheel went out in 1973 and just last year the timing chain went. There are 55,895 miles on it as of today, the car shows seem to put the miles on. I change the oil and filter every 500 miles (its cheap insurance) as I use a quart of oil every 500 miles. A new exhaust system is due this winter, the front two exhaust pipes are still original and are getting pretty thin. I run the car to shows with my grade school buddy "Carmen". He has a '32 Ford 3 window coupe. This Canadian built car has been a good one.
