Car: 1965 Beaumont Custom

My Beaumont story began a little over three years ago, in November 2001, when my wife, Sandy, suggested that I should go and purchase my own birthday present because she just wasn’t able to decide what I needed. I thought this was a great idea; so the next day I headed out looking for my dream car!
My dream car was a 1970 Chevelle 350 300hp; something like the one I had owned many years ago but sold to build a house and start a family. I thought that a ’70 Chevelle would make quite a birthday present! My search lead me to Wayne Morgan’s Car Shop in Winchester Ontario. There wasn’t a ’70 Chevelle in sight, however, my eyes spotted a fine looking turquoise metallic 1965 Beaumont. Upon closer examination I couldn’t help but notice the odometer reading of 35,000 miles. I also couldn’t believe that the Beaumont still had bias ply tires. As I was to find out, the odometer reading was truly 35,000 miles (today it has just over 40,000miles) and the tires were the originals. My ’70 Chevelle dream was fast fading, and my new dream was this Beaumont. I had fallen in love with this Canadian classic!
Further examination and discussion revealed that the 283 with powerglide transmission was the original matching numbers motor and tranny. The interior of the Beaumont was also original. GM vintage service information with the car indicated that the Beaumont was also original Artesian Turquoise Metallic and that the car was shipped to Baker Chev Olds in Renfrew Ontario on November 5th , 1964. It was one of 581 Beaumont Custom 2 drhdtps (Model # 73637) produced with a 283 powerglide combination.
The search for my birthday present had come to a sudden end. It wasn’t long before a deal was made and arrangements put in place to bring home my present! The car was in excellent condition and was ready for the summer shows and cruises. I knew that I would need to replace the orignal tires so a set of 60 series tires and Cragar mags replaced the original bias tires and hub caps. The Beaumont was now ready for the summer of 2002!
In the summer of 2003 the Beaumont was entered in the Northern Chevelle Gathering at Niagara Falls NY. I was thrilled to have my Beaumont selected as the favourite in its class. This past summer I took in thirteen shows in the Ottawa area. In eleven of the shows the Beaumont was recognized with first or second place trophies. My Beaumont seems to be the only stock ’65 Beaumont Custom Sports Coupe in the Ottawa area.
In the last year I have rechromed the headlight and taillight bezels and the wheel well mouldings. This winter I plan to have the bumpers rechromed and repaint the inside of the trunk. I am very happy that my wife allowed me to pick out my own birthday present three years ago. Needless to say, she has been purchasing the presents since 2001!
