Car: 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS 2 Dr Hdtp
![]() |
We purchased our 1965 Chevelle in June 1989. In the summer of 1990 I built a shop to work on it and started to seriously look at the car in my new shop in winter of 1990, 1991. Upon a detailed inspection I discovered that the Chevelle's body wasn't as good as I had previously thought. I then proceeded to strip the car down to the frame. The former owners had done only about half of the restoration, covering up major problems with quick fix bodywork and paint.
In 1992, when I seriously started looking for parts, I discovered that the parts I needed weren't available or no one was selling them. I solved that problem by purchasing four, '65 Chevelle 4 door sedans and four, '65 Chevelle 2 Dr hard tops for between $100.00 and $500.00 each. I then dismantled them, searched swap meets and checked over all available "Buy and Sell" classified ad trade papers, purchasing N.O.S. and reproduction parts as they and funds became available.
By 1995 I had acquired a good selection of parts. It was time to get busy cleaning up and selecting the various parts I would need for my project. Have the console, bumpers, mirror and dash re-chromed. Have the engine and transmission rebuilt and the radiator re-cored. 1996 was spent rebuilding the chassis, installing new steering parts, new brakes, new springs and shocks along with the axle and wheel bearings. In 1997 I put the body on the frame, installed engine and transmission, assembled front sheet metal, inspected and re installed all wiring harnesses In 1998 it was time to have the final body preparation and painting done. During winter of 1998 and 1999 I installed the side windows, put the bumpers on, I installed the dash and had the interior upholstery professionally installed.
One Saturday in March of 1999 I had been out to look at a 1965 Chevelle SS convertible, on the way home I wanted to buy a spare tire for our Chevelle. I stopped at a friends tire shop but wasn't sure of the exact tire size (I had bought four tires the year before) I drove home, got my registration, bought license plates and insurance, took them home, put the plates on our 1965 Chevelle SS. Then drove down to the tire shop and got the spare tire. Donna and I have been driving the Chevelle in good weather ever since. Our Chevelle is equipped with a 300 H.P. 327, a 2-speed power glide transmission, power brakes and power steering.
The car is equipped with the following
· Paint - Tahitian Turquoise Metallic · Motor - 327 -194 heads · Carb - 650 Holley · Guages - SS Package · Grant steering wheel · Power Brakes · Power steering · Transmission - 2 Spd Powerglide · Custom Auto sound AM/Fm cassette radio · Torque Thrust Mag Wheels by American Racing Wheels · 1 ¼ " Front sway bar · HD springs · Black interior
